*MISC* A very Cool Way to see where the snow is without leaving your computer. *WEATHER TERMINOLOGY* Meteorology definitions Ceiling- The height
of the lowest layer of clouds above the surface of the earth that is either broken or
overcast, but not thin. Wind Direction- the direction from which the wind is blowing. For example, a wind with a direction of 180° is coming from the south and is referred to as a southerly wind. Wind Speed- The velocity that air is moving past the observing station. The reported value is calculated by taking a 2-minute average of the wind speed. Should the wind speed be varying by 10 knots (11.5 MPH), the wind is considered to be gusting. This condition is reported in the observation by placing a "G" after the average wind speed and listing the maximum instantaneous observed speed. Pressure- the force exerted by the weight of the atmosphere above a given point. Usually expressed in Inches of Mercury (in Hg) or Millibars (mb). Humidity- A general term that refers to the content of water vapor in a given volume. Relative Humidity- The ratio of the amount of water vapor actually present in a volume to the maximum equilibrium vapor content of that same volume at a given temperature. Dew Point- The temperature to which water vapor at a given pressure must be cooled for saturation to occur. Saturation is the condition of the relative humidity being 100%. If the dew point falls below freezing, it is called the frost point. Temperature- A measure of the average speed or kinetic energy of the atoms and molecules in a substance. The two most common temperature scales are Celsius and Fahrenheit. TO CONTACT THE WEBMASTER OF THIS SITE SEND EMAIL TO: Webmaster@Snowway.net Last Updated: 01/30/2007 05:23 AM Copyright 2006. |
